The Inn redefines the art of hospitality with a once-in-a-generation transformation
The Durham landmark's ambitious, multi-year renovation earns coveted industry honors and extensive media attention
DURHAM, N.C., July 8, 2026 – The AAA Four Diamond rated Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club, part of the family of hotels, including JB Duke Hotel and The Lodge at Duke Medical Center, owned by Duke University, is celebrating a defining chapter in its nearly 40-year legacy. Its recent multi-million-dollar refresh has revitalized virtually every shared space across the property, elevating a beloved Durham institution to meet the expectations of today's most discerning travelers.
The renovation journey began in 2024 with a complete reimagining of the Inn's largest specialty suites and the AAA Four Diamond Fairview Dining Room and culminated in a stunning redesign of public spaces in 2025. Among the most recent additions are newly expanded and enhanced outdoor terraces, which extend the guest experience beyond the Inn's walls with picturesque settings for cocktails, dining and relaxation amid the towering pines of Duke Forest. Elegant louvered pergolas and retractable walls ensure comfort across all seasons, making the terraces a year-round destination. The reimagined lobby also debuts as a warm, inviting social hub, bringing renewed energy and a sense of place through curated artwork and botanical elements inspired by Duke’s natural beauty.
The transformation has resonated far beyond Durham. In the U.S. News & World Report 2026 Best Hotel rankings, the Inn earned the #1 spot among the top hotels in Durham, while also rising from #13 to #10 in the statewide list of the best hotels in North Carolina — a reflection of the extraordinary standard of excellence the Inn's team brings to every guest interaction.
That same commitment to quality drew the attention of prominent national and regional media, each telling the story of a beloved institution stepping boldly into its next chapter:
- Southern Living, the South's most widely read online lifestyle publication, featured the Inn in its authoritative guide to Durham, reaching more than 16 million monthly readers.
- Triangle Business Journal, an essential read for executives in North Carolina, published a slideshow visually showcasing the refreshed spaces.
- Hotel Business highlighted the renovation as a landmark moment for the region's hospitality landscape.
- Durham Magazine, the definitive voice of life in the Bull City, profiled the Inn’s renovations in its April/May 2026 edition, reintroducing the hotel to residents across Durham.
"When we embarked on this endeavor, our focus was always the guest experience — honoring what has made this Inn special for nearly four decades while creating spaces that feel fresh, inspired and worthy of the next generation of visitors," said Randy Kolls, co-managing partner and managing director of the family of hotels owned by Duke University. "To see that vision recognized by respected media and hospitality leaders is a testament to the team members who poured their hearts into every detail. We are incredibly proud of this accomplishment and look forward to welcoming guests to visit and experience our beautiful new spaces for themselves."
Designer and architectural historian Gary Inman, whose creative vision has guided the Inn for more than 20 years, commissioned local and regional artisans to create distinctive spaces that feel both timeless and contemporary. Custom murals by artist Paul Montgomery, sculpted botanicals by Hillsborough's Tommy Mitchell, ironwork by metal artist Aaron Gibbons and handcrafted drapery by Jeff Hall, a relative of the Duke family, are among the many bespoke touches woven throughout the property.
